Bukidnon logs over 5,000 dengue cases since January 2024

As of August 2024, Bukidnon has recorded over 5,000 cases of dengue, a significant increase from the 4,000 cases reported during the same period in 2023. The Provincial Health Office (PHO) has confirmed that at least 17 individuals have succumbed to the disease. Despite the alarming rise in cases, there has not been an official declaration of an outbreak, nor has a state of calamity been announced.

Malaybalay City leads with 926 reported cases, closely followed by Valencia City with 508 cases. Both cities have reported two deaths each. In response to the escalating situation, the local government of Malaybalay City has initiated fogging operations in affected areas and distributed treated mosquito nets to schools to mitigate the spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Sergio Flores, the PHO Dengue Coordinator, stressed the critical role of cleanliness and fogging in dengue prevention. "Failure to clean up and fog will result in the continuous breeding of mosquitoes in stagnant water, necessitating thorough cleanup efforts," he advised.

Health officials have urged the public to adopt the 5S habit to combat dengue: search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, practice self-protection measures, seek early medical consultation, support fogging operations, and maintain proper hydration.
