Armed suspect accosted by Rizal cops killed in shootout

A suspect was killed in a shootout with police in Taytay town, Rizal, as reported by EJ Gomez on 24 Oras Weekend. The incident occurred early Saturday morning when barangay tanods and police were patrolling the streets and noticed the suspect with a gun.

According to Romel Cañolas, the team leader of Barangay Sta. Ana, the suspect pulled out his gun and fired when accosted by the authorities. He opened fire because he knew there were many officers present. The suspect fired four shots before running about 500 meters into an alley, still armed.

Rizal Provincial Office Director Police Colonel Felipe Maraggun confirmed that the suspect was hit after police returned fire. Authorities recovered four bullet casings from the .45 caliber handgun used by the suspect. He was taken to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The suspect had a history of being jailed for selling illegal drugs and possession of illegal firearms, having been released in April. Maraggun mentioned that they are also looking into the possibility of the suspect's ties to the illegal drug trade in Taytay, particularly in Barangay Santa Ana.
