The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has called on the families and friends of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) still residing in Lebanon to encourage them to return to the Philippines due to the escalating cross-border conflict between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.
According to Sam Nielsen's report on Super Radyo dzBB, OWWA has provided contact information for OFWs and their family members who require assistance:
- For OFWs: +961 79110729
- For Dependents: +961 70858086
Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega stated on Sunday that OFWs based in Lebanon have expressed their willingness to return to the Philippines amidst the ongoing tensions.
To date, a total of 356 individuals have been repatriated. There are approximately 11,000 Filipinos throughout Lebanon, some of whom are undocumented.
The Philippine Embassy in Lebanon issued an advisory to Filipino citizens urging them to leave Lebanon immediately while the airport remains open. For those unable to leave, the Embassy advised evacuating to safer areas outside of Beirut, South Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley.
In Mav Gonzales’ 24 Oras Weekend report, OFW Bernadith Guiang mentioned that she intends to stay in Beirut despite her family's desire for her to return to the Philippines. “I’m not worried yet but the only thing I want is to move if I have a place to transfer to. Don’t worry about me because I’m fine here, if the situation worsens, I might go home,” Guiang said.
According to Hezbollah, the latest bombing in Southern Lebanon resulted in at least 10 fatalities, including two children.
The situation in Lebanon is currently at Alert Level 3, which signifies voluntary repatriation. The Philippine government will provide the means for those who wish to return to the country. The Department of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the situation to determine if it is necessary to raise the alert level to No. 4, which would indicate mandatory repatriation.
Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac noted, “The situation is tense. There are speculations that something worse is about to happen in the next few days.”
For OFWs who cannot leave Lebanon, it is recommended that they relocate to safer places outside Beirut, South Lebanon, and the Beeka Valley.
